How To Buy A Gaming PC

For a truly connected and immersive experience, gaming desktops reign supreme. We walk you through the details of choosing the right gaming PC for you.

When many people think of gaming, they automatically think of gaming consoles. And, sure, many households have at least one (if not all) of the three major gaming consoles available: the Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony Playstation 3, and Nintendo Wii. But for a truly connected and immersive gaming experiences desktop PCs reign supreme. Gaming PCs are more upgradable than laptops, and it's still easier to install expansion packages to PC games than on consoles. There are vast online communities dedicated to modifying games to get desired results ('mods'). You need to use a PC for the best in 3D gaming, and you simply can't get all the new gaming bells and whistles unless you have a high-powered gaming PC. That said, you don't necessarily have to buy the most expensive desktop to play the most popular games.

Design Matters
Gaming PCs used to be humungous behemoths that took up a lot of space underneath your desk. You can still buy one of these monoliths, especially if you're interested in a multi-graphics card setup (more on that later). However, more modest mini-towers, all in one PCs, and small form factor PCs are certainly powerful enough to play all but the most strenuous games at the highest screen resolutions. Small form factor PCs and all in ones have the added benefit of being portable, in case you're on the way to a social gaming session at a friend's house or a rented hall somewhere.

CPU: The Gaming PC's Heart
The gaming developers all post what their minimum requirements are for their games. Popular games like World of Warcraft list old-school single-core processors like the 1.3GHz Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon XP 1500+ as minimum, but you really don't want to play at "minimum" on a new PC. Likewise, ultra low power (ULV and CULV) -core AMD and Intel processors are best left to being Web-browsing secondary PCs in your house. You can play simple games including role-playing games (RPGs) like Torchlight and casual games like Diner Dash or Plants vs. Zombies on a modest dual-core AMD or Intel processor.
If you're more serious about your gaming, look for a faster dual core or true quad coreAMD A or Intel processor, so you can play today's games and tomorrow's. First person shooter games will work fine on mid-level dual or quad core PCs, but if you tend to buy the latest game as soon at it is released, look at quad-core processors like the Intel Core i5/i7 or the six-core AMD Phenom II X6. Multi-core processors will pay off on games that tout "realistic physics" or "class leading visuals," but for the most part four or more cores help multimedia tasks more than gaming. Some processors are touted as being "quad-core class". This translates to: "dual core processor with better multi-thread handling". Strangely enough, these processors work fine as gaming platforms, as long as your GPU is strong enough.

System Memory and Storage
Memory is cheap these days. Buy at least 4GB of RAM. Use whatever speed is recommended for your system (DDR2-800, DDR3-1333, etc.)—end of story. For storage, getting a 500GB hard drive should only cost a few extra bucks compared with a standard 320GB one, and will hold many games. You can get a system with one or more solid-state drives (SSD) instead of a spinning SATA hard drive, but they are very expensive on a Gigabyte-per-dollar basis (around $300 for a 256GB SSD versus $60 for a 1TB SATA hard drive). If you're really impatient, the SSD can dramatically decrease loading times and reboot times (seconds vs. minutes), but for now they're not worth the added expense unless you're flush with cash.

Graphics Muscle
Just about every one of the PC reviews on pcmag.com lists integrated graphics as bad for gaming. This is for the most part true, but integrated graphics like Intel HD Graphics 3000 and ATI Radeon HD 6450 can handle limited 3D gaming. These graphic processors (GPUs) are certainly powerful enough to handle most casual games like Diner Dash, Farmville, and even light 3D games like Torchlight, Sims 2/3, and Spore. Getting a single high end GPU like the ATI Radeon HD 6670 or Nvidia GeForce GT 560 Ti is enough to play high end games like Crysis, Lost Planet 2, or the latest graphics masterpiece at moderate screen resolutions (1,280 by 720 in our standard tests).
If you want to max out your 3D performance and likely send your credit card cowering, then you can upgrade to two or three high-end graphics cards like the ATI Radeon HD 6990 (with CrossFireX) or Nvidia GeForce GTX 590 (with SLI). These highest-end graphics card will add over a thousand dollars to your final price, but then again these highest end PCs are the gaming equivalent of a million dollar supercar.
Make sure you buy one of those 24 to 27-inch 120Hz high-resolution 3D-capable monitors to make your multiple GPU system worth it. I'm still unsure about the viability of stereoscopic 3D in the gaming PC market, but you will be prepared if 3D ever takes off. Just be forewarned that stereoscopic 3D usually requires you to use 3D glasses. You may never use the system to its highest potential, and there will be something faster in 6-9 months, but you can tell your friends you have arrived in the upper strata if you buy one.

An eight-year-old Pakistani boy has cleared exams undertaken for becoming a Microsoft Certified Technology specialist.

Shafay Thobani mastered complex internet protocol and domain name systems to become a certified professional. He passed the baffling tests with a huge 91 percent score, following a gruelling 13 months of learning, a UK daily reported.

This child prodigy could be the world's youngest expert on Microsoft computers at such a tender age, the report added.

His father Shau Thobani, a chief executive officer of a tech firm, is full of pride over his son's achievement as he says: "Shafay is so intelligent. He does complicated maths on his hands instead of a calculator."

"I feel like the luckiest parent because at the end of each day I only ever receive very positive feedback from Shafay's teachers."

"Every year I give Shafay a new challenge to try and encourage him," he added.

Shafay first started working with computers aged four, and now combines school classes with children his own age with five hours of computer classes a day.

Microsoft spokesperson Thomas Jensen said: "Microsoft does not keep track of the ages of the people who take the certification. I'm not aware of anyone younger than Shafay - however I can't officially confirm this."

Despite Shafay's remarkable achievement, his father says the little boy will be free to choose his own career when he grows up. "I'm not forcing Shafay to do anything in his future. He will decide what he wants to do himself."

LG Optimus L3 E400

LG Optimus L3 specifications leaked
The Optimus L3 specifications are a mixed bag. 3.2 inch display size and 240 x 320 pixels resolution belongs to the entry-level category, and so does the 3 megapixel camera. Seems like none of the major smartphone manufactures are ready to ship handset with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich quite yet.
What the LG Optimus L3 does have, is Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi hotspot. And the supported network bands are also not something we often see in entry-level devices: Quad-band GSM and dual-band 3G coverage in addition to HSPA with 3.6Mbps download speed.
At 144 Euro, the LG is a very cheap handset. Very few competitors exists in that price segment. But should be able to pick up some older Galaxy's and some Huawei's with Android 2.3 priced below 144 Euro.
According to the web store Cdon, the expected release date for the Optimus L3 is on February 27 which happen to be the first day of Mobile World Congress. We might hear official words about this device from LG at that time.

The fuel tank, side scoops, rear-view mirrors, alloys and most of the parts are all-new and doesn't resemble to any other Pulsar. The front is best part of the styling, it gives very fierc and aggressive look to the bike. The rear-end features clear lens LED tail light and spilt grab rails. The turn indicators are same like Pulsar 135 which gels very well with the overall design of the bike. The design of alloys is also new and stylish which further enhances the looks of Pulsar 200NS. Bajaj will also launch faired version of 200NS in near future, which will compete with the likes of Yamaha R15 Version 2.0, Hero Honda Karizma ZMR and Honda CBR250R.

Xbox 720 and PS4

Waiting Is the Hardest Part

We’ve just rung in another new year so it seems fitting to reflect on the past for a moment and spend some time looking to the future. Gaming has become a staple of many people’s entertainment consumption and the next 12 months will be extremely important as there is a possibility of two new consoles landing on the market from two of the industry’s leaders.

Xbox 720 Concept
Do you remember where you were the first time you picked up the controller of an Xbox 360? Maybe you were like me and picked it up at a friend’s house to sit down for a marathon session of Halo back in the Winter of 2005. It was a beautiful machine that was absolutely dazzling to interact with.
Now, more than six years later, the rumor mill is churning with word that a new console is in development at the Microsoft HQ. This makes sense considering that most consoles have a shelf life of about five to six years. The rumored “720” is still nothing more than that — a rumor. But there have been some educated guesses as to its release date (late 2012) and the specs that the new super console will sport. These include a super fast CPU/GPU hybrid chip that will be similar to that of the Xbox 360 S. The general acceptance of the Xbox Kinect has many gamers connecting the dots to the assumption that the next console will feature a built-in Kinect feature that would, in a perfect world, fix the problem of lag that the current model suffers from. There is also some rumor that the games will be played on the console through some sort of Cloud system, not unlike Steam, which is employed by PC gamers.
The Xbox 360 has been challenged for gaming dominance by the Sony PS3. The latter has been slightly edged out by the former. The 360 currently hovers at a little over 50 million and the PS3 sits right under that number.

PlayStation 4 Concept
Sony hopes to secure the crown of gaming dominance with their PS4 system. Its rumored release of late 2012 seems reasonable and follows the 6-year release pattern Sony has used with its Playstation series so far. The new unit is expected to retail between $600 and $700. It will use the Cell Processor Sony has been developing for the better part of the last decade, but with a few enhancements. The first is doubling of the SPE (Synergistic Processing Elements, basically the things that allow your games to run fast, look great). More SPEs means better performance. Finally, the system is expected to continue with Blu-Ray technology. Sony has invested millions into that technology and abandoning it now would seem a very foolish move.
Keep in mind these are all hypotheses and educated guesses about two companies that have made their name pushing the boundaries of gaming forward. The only way to know for sure what will be included in these exciting new systems is to wait for the release and try it out yourself. It’s true what they say: waiting is the hardest part.
